17/04: Podcast Episode #7 - Group Running

Thursday, April 17, 2008

Episode #7 is up.

Left click to LISTEN NOW or right click to DOWNLOAD.

In this episode, I share some thoughts about the power of the group run for completing long distances. I've found the group run experience to be very beneficial. Have you?

People do things in a group that they would never do alone. I think this is why some people who run marathons look back and wonder how they ever did it. It's actually quite remarkable.

I hope you enjoy the podcast. Feel free to leave a comment below or shoot me an email at hsodpk@yahoo.com.

15/04: The Power of the Group

Tuesday, April 15, 2008

Tax Day...for procrastinators...well, good luck! For others, electronic filing is wonderful. We already have our refund and it's pretty nice. Thank you, Uncle Sam!

I'm currently working on podcast episode #7 and the topic is the power of the 'group run.' I participated in the Blunts Bridge Challenge over the weekend and will include some thoughts about its brutality in the next podcast. I would like to thank all of the out-of-towners who came to Ashland to run the route (especially Todd Callis!). Many thanks to Tom Grant for organizing it and dropping the water/gatorade cooler at the halfway mark. Tom, do I owe you any money?

I'm gradually increasing my mileage after a little hiatus from double digit runs. Due to the overuse injury I suffered in my knees last year, I thought it would be wise to chill a bit and get back into it gradually. Three and four mile runs just don't really do it for me so I guess I need to get on the weight machine and get those quads stronger.

Episode #7 will be out before the weekend.

05/04: Podcast Episode #5 - Marathon Journey - Part II

Saturday, April 5, 2008

Episode #5 is up.

Left click to listen now or right click to DOWNLOAD.

In this episode, I talk about what inspired me to run a second and third marathon.

I have decided to run the Outer Banks (North Carolina) Marathon on November 9, 2008. It will be my fourth marathon and I'm very excited about it. I will begin training in mid May. In the meantime, I'll stay active with runs ranging from 5-8 miles in length.

I ran the Outer Banks half marathon in 2007 with several friends and had a great time. It's where I got my PR for the half distance!

One of the reasons I've decided to run the Outer Banks race is due to the post race party. It is outstanding! It's not just a standing around type of affair. They do it up right! Also, the course is mostly flat and spectator friendly if you have a good support crew.

In case you are not familiar with the Outer Banks of North Carolina, it is where the Wright brothers figured out how to fly.

02/04: Baltimore Marathon VIDEO from 2007

Wednesday, April 2, 2008

Here is the video mentioned in the podcast coming out this Saturday:

This is a video I made when I ran the Baltimore Marathon in 2007. It's rather long (almost 30 minutes) but it has some cool footage of the experience. I recommend letting it load so you can skip around if you are interested in watching it. I had a flip video camera for the first 7 or 8 miles and the video is mostly race experience commentary on the initial miles of the marathon. I think it would be interesting for first time marathoners.

I used a small flip camera that belonged to WBAL-TV (Baltimore TV station). The camera was provided to me after I agreed to do some video blogging for WBAL. As a result of that, I got a cool marathon souvenir in the form of a video. I hope you like it.

29/03: Podcast Episode #4 - Marathon Journey - Part I

Saturday, March 29, 2008

Episode #4 is up.

Left click to listen now or right click to DOWNLOAD.

In this episode of the Running in the Center of the Universe podcast, I talk about what inspired me to train for and finish my first marathon. This is part one of a two part series. I will talk about why I ran a second and third marathon in part two which will come out next week.

If you have ever thought about training for a marathon, then I encourage you to fully explore what it entails. The hardest part is making the decision to do it. In this podcast, I explain what 2006 was like for me.

22/03: "PICKUP150" VIDEO - An Effort To Make A Difference

Saturday, March 22, 2008

Click here for 5 minute VIDEO

Okay, addressing litter in the community is little off of the topic of running. I know that. But, I'm on board with celebrating Ashland's 150th anniversary as an incorporated town and I think picking up litter is a good thing to do. I think it would be pretty hard to debate that. I hope you get inspired by the video.

I spent one hour picking up trash in the area of a retention pond that is easily visible from a large shopping center. I think it looks better. I would like to hear from folks who decide to do a project on their own. Either comment here or email hsodpk@yahoo.com.
