Using musical parodies that span genres from light opera to hip hop, they introduce and illuminate such concepts as limits, integration and differentiation. With their unique comic style they dramatize some high points of calculus’ history. From Archimedes to Riemann, the quest for the instantaneous rate of change and the area under the curve comes to life through song! Musical tributes to The Beatles, Gilbert & Sullivan, Petula Clark and even Eminem are just a few of the artists who have inspired this engaging and educational lesson that is nothing at all like your high school textbooks. Calculus: The Musical! promises to be entertaining to the arithmophobe and the rocket scientist alike.

When Imperial Spain lay claim to the New World, many of her men fled the Old World, never to return. The exodus of husbands and potential marriage partners had a practical and profound effect on the women they left behind.

Allyson Poska of Mary Washington University will discuss how some Spanish women coped with this new situation by deliberately opting out of marriage or figuring out ways to maneuver around laws and customs that made surviving the absence of husbands so challenging. Poska is the author of the award-winning Women and Authority in Early Modern Spain: The Peasants of Galicia.

In the meantime, we can still celebrate our 154th by showing our pride in our community. This weekend, February 17-19, dig deep into your dresser drawer and pull out an Ashland t-shirt, sweatshirt, or cap and wear it when you’re out and about town. It can be from an Ashland Musical Variety Show, a Railroad Run, the Ashland 150th celebration, the Strawberry Faire, or one of the many other great events held here in the Center of the Universe.

Don’t have any Ashland attire? Visit one of our great downtown merchants such as The Caboose or Train Town Toy & Hobby and pick up a shirt or cap. And while you’re downtown, do your weekly grocery shopping at Cross Brothers, which celebrates its 100th anniversary in 2012 – another great milestone that the Ashland Museum and Main Street will help commemorate in May. Let’s make sure Cross Brothers stays in business for another hundred years!

See you around town this weekend… we’ll be wearing our “Ashland’s Got Talent” shirts.
