The Ashland Police Department is teaming up with the National Football League (NFL), the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), and law enforcement officials to remind everyone to designate a sober driver if they plan to drink alcohol on Super Bowl Sunday.

“We want to pass our safety message to everyone who will be celebrating this weekend” said Chief Goodman. “Please act responsibly and designate a sober driver before the Super Bowl party begins.”

Super Bowl Sunday is one of America’s biggest and most entertaining national sporting events as friends and families gather to socialize and watch the big game. Unfortunately, it has also become one of the Nation’s most dangerous days on the roadways due to drunk driving.

According to research by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, in past years, fatalities in alcohol-impaired-driving crashes accounted for 31% of all motor vehicle traffic fatalities. Historically, on Super Bowl Sunday, 49% of the fatalities occurred in crashes where a driver or motorcycle rider had a blood alcohol concentration (BAC) level of .08 or higher.

The Ashland Police Department will have additional officers on patrol this weekend to assist in removing drunk drivers from our community’s roadways.

This Saturday might be a good day to finish up your holiday shopping, or if you ask the owners of Thrill of the Hunt, a great day to start! Thrill of the Hunt would like to invite the public to it’s Grand Opening, this Saturday December 10th beginning at 10 a.m. The owners Dana and Cathy Wood and their daughter and son-in-law, Cristan and Rob Silliman recently moved into the 2500 sq. ft. warehouse space located at 315 England Street near Randolph Macon College. After major renovations to the space, the once dark and dusty warehouse is now a bright and eclectic array of “Up-cycled furniture, art, gifts, collectibles, and vintage finds”.
Although this family owned business is just opening it’s doors, the hobby of finding and up-cycling the furniture has always been a full time job. “Now we just get to share it with everyone”, said Cristan. The owners of Thrill of the Hunt hope to stand out in the crowd of consignment shops, antique malls, and local thrift stores, and don’t really fall into any one category. A refreshing art gallery with work from local artists, boutique style gifts just in time for the holidays, and a “project room” containing unique pieces that have not had the chance to be up-cycled, are just a few things that might set them apart.
So come Saturday, whether in search of that special piece of furniture, or one of a kind gift, or even if you just want to stop in to say hello while sampling from their great selection of old fashioned penny candy, the friendly folks at Thrill of the Hunt can’t wait to meet you. If you are unable to make it out this weekend, you can still check them out at www.thrillofthehuntva.com or on Facebook at www.facebook.com/thrillofthehunt . Thrill of the Hunt is open 7 days a week, Monday-Saturday from 10 a.m. until 7 p.m. and Sunday from 12 p.m. until 5 p.m.

Across the nation, there are trees that have witnessed the years come and go, watched monumental events take place, and shaded the lives of people we hold as heroes. Our Historic Tree Program brings history alive by growing the offspring of these famous trees. From the George Washington Tulip Poplar to the Martin Luther King Jr. Sycamore, our unique trees provide a tangible link between American history and the environment. Planting and care for a tree is one of the most positive actions a person can take toward creating a healthier and green world. Historic trees provide a hands-on experience that promotes working together to make a difference in the community and for the future.

How you can help?

American Forests’ Historic Tree Nursery no longer sells historic trees to the general public. We need your help in finding a good home for these trees. We are asking for a small donation of $25 for each tree to support the program. (These trees originally cost $50 – 60 with shipping). These trees are 1 – 3 feet tall and come with the necessary tools to properly plant and care for them. Trees can be planted this fall before the ground freezes, or potted indoors during the winter.

This is a great opportunity to help the environment and support one of the country’s leading organizations that works to protect and restore forests. Our goal is to donate 100 trees to the town of Ashland.

If you are interested in a tree, please leave your name and phone number at 804-798-2532. Deborah Shannon will return your call with a list of available trees.

Who is American Forests?

We work to protect and restore forests around the world, using a comprehensive approach to forest conservation. We plant millions of trees each year through our Global ReLeaf program, partner to restore damaged ecosystems, advocate for sound, science-based forest conservation policy, and work with cities to expand urban tree canopy cover. We also run programs like the National Register of Big Trees and Historic Trees to foster an interest in and appreciation of the largest and most significant trees in the country.

On Saturday, October 29, 2011 from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm the Ashland Police Department will partner with the Drug Enforcement Agency to take part in a nationwide prescription drug take back. There will collection sites operating around the nation to include the Ashland Police Department where Americans can turn in their unused, unneeded, expired prescription medications. We will not ask questions concerning prescription drugs needing to be disposed; we do ask not to bring syringes or any other street drug. Drugs can stay in its original sealed container or emptied in the bin.

Last April, Americans turned in 376,593 pounds—188 tons—of prescription drugs at nearly 5,400 sites operated by the DEA and more than 3,000 state and local law enforcement partners (Source: DEA.gov)
